    Home Away from Home

by Ashley Rable, Denver Community Organizer

Located 2,000 miles west of Massachusetts is Colorado, The Rocky Mountain State and a western Mecca for State Radio and Calling All Crows.  Since Calling All Crows' inception Colorado has always been a place where volunteers, fans and activists would show up and participate in service projects right from the start of CAC. Whether the projects were in Ft. Collins, Colorado Springs, Boulder, or Denver, volunteers are always jumping at the chance to participate.

From 2009 on Calling All Crows knew that they could count on Colorado residents to answer the call for social action with every State Radio tour. Whether it is an acoustic show with Chad to benefit Haiti or donation sorting project with Dress for Success, each project has been successful in its own way.

During the shows I have personally witnessed volunteers tabling passionately to endorse Calling All Crows, trying to attract new members. I have heard these same people advocate for petitions they feel strongly about to encourage others to get involved. The enthusiasm the Colorado Calling All Crows team exudes is contagious and you can’t help but be excited about each and every service project when you know amazing people are working alongside you.  As one Crow put it, “I love being a Colorado Crow because I have the opportunity to work with some of the most dedicated volunteers and community leaders. The energy is always positive and fun, everyone here is willing to bring something different to the table while working together for a great cause.”

The truth is, Colorado is known for its social awareness and for volunteering and clearly that has transferred into the Crows who are out here. There have been times when service projects have had to turn volunteers away because of the overwhelming interest in helping. As a result, Calling All Crows put a Community Organizer in Denver to arrange monthly service projects, and that person is me. I truly love this state and all it has to offer, but I love the people who seem to congregate here even more. Colorado seems to breed friendliness, compassion, people who are socially conscious and don’t just sit back but speak their mind, people who are passionate, kind, imaginative, and helpful.  And these same people are involved in Calling All Crows. The people in Colorado understand the grassroots effort that Calling All Crows is trying to achieve and support the mission statement 100%.
